Golf Simulator Room Size: Dimensions You Need for Height, Width and Depth

Before you shop for a golf simulator, you need to know whether your room is big enough. Three measurements decide it: ceiling height, width and depth. Here are the dimensions to aim for and how each one changes your options.

Ceiling height

A full driver swing peaks roughly 30 inches above the golfer’s head. Add the mat and at least 6 inches of clearance, and most adults need about 9 feet. See our full ceiling height guide for a table by golfer height.

Width

A golfer needs about 6 feet of room on their side of the ball and about 4 feet on the other side for the follow-through. That makes about 10 feet the minimum for one-sided hitting. If righties and lefties will share the bay, the ball moves to the center and you need about 12 feet, with 14 feet being comfortable. Some manufacturers go bigger: Uneekor recommends at least 13 feet of width for full driver swings, and 15 feet for golfers 6 feet or taller.

Depth

Depth covers three things: about a foot behind the screen for the enclosure, 8 to 10 feet between the ball and the screen to limit bounce-back, and room behind the ball for the backswing. Launch monitors that sit behind the golfer need several more feet, which is why radar units usually need the deepest rooms. Some makers recommend more than these minimums. Uneekor, for example, suggests 12 feet from the tee to the screen, with 10 feet as the floor if you can live with more bounce-back.

Screen size follows the room

Once you know your width and height, the screen size mostly sets itself: leave room for the enclosure frame on each side and above. The room planner calculates the largest 16:9 or 4:3 screen that fits.
